Mobile phone companies
You may wish to purchase a mobile phone soon after arriving in the UK.
People in the UK, like many countries around the world, are increasingly reliant upon their ‘mobiles’ for everyday communication.
How do I get a mobile phone?
The most recognised mobile phone providers in the UK are Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4 U and at least one will have an outlet on the High Street of most major towns and cities. These companies sell mobile phones on behalf of all the main operators. If not, the major networks (Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile) will have shops in town centres as well.
Top tip: It’s worth visiting more than one retailer, and also looking at their websites to find the different deals that are available.
How do I know which type of mobile phone is best for me?
There are many different types of mobile phone, and you should choose one based on your personal requirements. Some mobiles only have the basic functions which will allow you to call your contacts and send text messages. These can be purchased very cheaply. You may wish to buy a phone with a camera and access to the internet, but these will be more expensive and may require a contract term.
How do I pay for my mobile phone?
You can pay for your phone in two ways, and the shop you wish to buy your phone in will explain the options to you. Essentially, you can buy a ‘pay as you go’ phone, where you pay for the handset and ‘top-up’ your phone as and when you need to.
The other option is to purchase a ‘contract’ for your phone, where you will pay a fixed price every month for a set allowance of calls and texts. Depending on the frequency with which you use your phone, the second option may be better value.
