What is a Construction NVQ?
A construction NVQ is an industry wide recognised qualification from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). This certifies you have vocational skills in your trade that have been professionally assessed by an experienced and highly qualified assessor. The assessment is performed at your place of work, where an individual will check a list of skills that you prove you have through your day job.
Why do I need a Construction NVQ?
Without a construction NVQ, you may not be able to get a CSCS card, which is the gateway to working on site.
Over 80% of people working in construction have a CSCS card. If you want to work on major construction projects you will need this certification, no matter what your role is.
How can I get a Construction NVQ?
You get a construction NVQ while you are working on your day job. A qualified member of our assessment team will come out to visit you and grade you as you work.
If you are just starting out in the industry or are a school leaver, you will need to do an apprenticeship before you take an NVQ, which all together will take 2-3 years to complete.
Experienced and skilled tradespeople have Level 2 NVQ qualifications - they will be able to go up to Level 3 if they have are going to have supervisory job responsibilities, and Level 4 if they fulfil a managerial role. NVQ Levels therefore operate as an indicator of job responsibility.
Most of the CSCS cards are valid for 5 years. The only exception is the Trainee cards (for people who are in the process of gaining their qualifications). Trainee cards are temporary and are valid for 1 or 3 years (duration depends on the course the person is taking).
